Comparisons of the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A5, and Lexus RC
Mon, 13 Mar 2017
If you’re feeling overwhelmed trying to find the best luxury car for your lifestyle and needs, you aren’t alone. With so many different manufacturers and car models laying claim to the title of “top luxury car”, it can be frustrating to find the model that is the right fit for you.
So, we’ve taken the time to give you our comparison of the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes C-Class, Audi A5, and Lexus RC (Recent model years: 2016-2017).
When you compare the BMW 4 series to many of its leading competitors, the biggest knock against BMWs is that they fail to come out with stunning new designs on an annual basis compared to other brands. In reality though, BMW always brings a sporty look to the luxury segment, and while the 4 Series might not boast the most elegant appearance, it’s still extremely stylish.
The Mercedes C-Class is the big winner here, with the most elegant and refined exterior appearance, and the Audi A5 is sleek and stylish, but as usual, the German luxury brand could be more exciting at the same time.
That said, enter the the Lexus RC. The RC has (arguably at least) the boldest – albeit, also the most “boyish” – design when compared to the A5, C Class and 4 Series.
Interior Practicality and Technology
As you move to the inside, the competition between these four heavyweights gets tougher. The Mercedes C-Class has the most refined interior cabin when pitted up against the BMW, Audi, and Lexus models in this comparison; however, the infotainment system known as Mercedes COMAND leaves a little to be desired when put up against the German models in particular.
If you’re looking for the best luxury car in terms of interior practicality and infotainment, the Audi A5 is the best of the bunch with a great design–though not as refined as the Mercedes–and a Virtual Cockpit gauge cluster that provides clear visuals.
The BMW 4 Series has the strongest infotainment set in the group, but lags a bit in terms of its interior design and seating flow.
The Lexus RC has an infotainment system that’s tough to work with and a bit of a confusing design, but the quality of the car matches the C-Class and it has incredibly comfortable seats.
Performance on the Road
We’ve saved the best for last because, after all, you’re going to be driving this car for a while. If you struggle finding a solution in exciting to drive vs. smooth ride, then your struggles are near an end.
The BMW 4 Series offers the most exciting drive in the group, with the M sport package included, xDrive all-wheel drive, and adaptive suspension, you’ll find this vehicle the most dynamic and responsive.
That doesn’t mean the other models are slouches though!
The Mercedes C-Class might lack some of that sporty punch, but among these four it has the best combination of comfort and noise reduction of any of the top luxury cars.
The Audi A5 is just behind these two models, mainly because the base A5 is front-wheel drive and lacks Audi’s Quattro all-wheel drive and has just standard suspension.
Lexus RC models have handling and performance that won’t sparkle, but are far from sloppy in their own right.
